Refrigerator Tip: Don’t Block the Airflow

Your refrigerator keeps food cold by circulating air from the freezer into the refrigerator section through a vent called a damper. This cold air must move freely throughout the refrigerator to keep temperatures consistent. When food or containers block these vents, the airflow becomes restricted and the refrigerator may struggle to cool properly.

Blocked airflow is one of the most common causes of cooling complaints we see. When items are packed tightly against the back wall or vents, cold air cannot circulate. This can lead to problems such as food freezing in certain spots, warm areas on shelves, or the refrigerator running longer than normal.

Fortunately, this is easy to prevent. Try to keep vents clear, avoid overpacking the refrigerator, and leave small spaces between containers so cold air can move throughout the cabinet. When putting groceries away, it only takes a second to make sure the vents are not blocked.

If your refrigerator still isn’t cooling properly even after clearing the vents, there may be another issue such as a fan or damper problem.
